Amparo Goes Old School. Or, I Should've Read These Classics A Long Time Ago

Yep. It's true. I am a Literature grad student and I haven't read some of the most beloved classics.

*slaps wrist*

But hey, new year, new goals, right? Well, one of those goals will be to rectify my shameful behavior. I've chosen to read ten novels I should've read a long time ago. Like, CENTURIES ago. Not only because they're classics, but also because they sound like books I will enjoy. So. This classics-reading endeavor will be chronicled on my blog, of course. I'll be writing about what each book taught me (even if I don't end up loving them).

This new feature will be called:

And here's le list of ten classics:

  • Pride & Prejudice
  • Jane Eyre
  • The Picture of Dorian Gray
  • Anna Karenina
  • David Copperfield
  • Villette
  • Northanger Abbey
  • The Castle Of Otranto
  • Madame Bovary
  • The Mysteries Of Udolpho

So there you have them. The books I shall devour... or read verrrryyyyyyy slooooooowlyyyy... throughout this year. I hope to survive this mission, folks. I really do. *crosses fingers*

Now tell me: have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think??

  1. This is a wonderful idea, and it's one of my goals too. A few of these are on my to-read list. I did start reading Jane Eyre, but I never finished it.

  2. I've read them all except the Anne Radcliffe books. That's a great list! Some of my favorites are included (Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Anna Karenina, The Picture of Dorian Gray, David C.). David C. and Anna Karenina take some patience but the other three are all entertaining all the time. Have fun!

  3. I've read P&P, Jane Eyre, David Copperfield, and Northanger Abbey. The Jane Austens are great fun, and I would read them again. David Copperfield is wonderful, but it's very long, so it's best read when you have the time and attention to devote to it. I didn't enjoy Jane Eyre quite as much, but it was quite readable, and I'm glad I read it because it really is iconic.

I wouldn't have thought of The Mysteries of Udolpho as a classic. Not that I know who decides these things anyway!

  4. You know my standpoint on Jane Eyre, and I ADORE Northanger Abbey. Pride and Prejudice, surprisingly enough, falls behind it. Since I love Charlotte Bronte, I loved Villette (not as much as Jane Eyre, though, because it's a bit more angsty and less happy). Other than that, the remaining titles are ones that I should get around to sooner or later, and already know the gist of because of those years watching nearly every BBC drama in existence.

One title you don't have on your list - well, two, by the same author - that I really enjoyed are Cranford and North and South, by Elisabeth Gaskell.
