Okay, folks. Another trend question headed your way.
Today's topic: What do you think about fairy tale retellings?
Sucks to say it, but I haven't gotten my hands on any as of yet. But I do find retellings interesting, especially if I love the original fairy tale.
Well... I sort of love all of them, so... Yeah...
Anyway, here are two books I'm dying to read:
Cinderella and Red Riding Hood? Count me in! :D
What say you, blogging buddies? You in or out of the retelling craze?
I haven't heard of the first book you mentioned, but I did finally pick up The Sisters Red. I love retellings. I like to see the new twists that authors put on them. I'll have to check out Ash...looks good. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI read Ash already. There's an interesting twist that probably no one will expect. But overall, I did like the book, though I found the MC a little less than active. Maybe because she was bound up in the confines of the existing fairytale?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I haven't read the second one yet. I'd like to though!
It's not quite the same thing (actually it probably isn't the same thing!!) but what I find interesing are that some work and some don't - the constant "modernization" of classics. ie. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet for instance works most times but not when the language is deliberately re-written to "suit a modern younger audience" ie. Charles Baum's re-writing of Charles Dickens' novels into "yoof speak".
ReplyDeleteBut these books look fab - I'll have to read them to see how and if they work! Thanks for the info.
take care

I really want to read both of these. And I LOVE fairytale re-tellings. You might look up Alex Flinn, she's written a few. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you and Amanda J. I love fairytale renditions, and want to write a few of my own someday, though they might be satirical unlike these.
ReplyDeleteI can't count how many times SISTERS RED has been recommended to me. I really need to read it. As for Ash, never heard of it but I love the cover. Is it Cinderella?
I would be more inclined to read one of these type of books than the last category, but only slightly more. :)
ReplyDeleteIf it's written well, I will read it. Liking it is a different thing all together. =)
ReplyDeleteI love fairy tale re-tellings! I especially seek them out -- my favorite is Beauty and the Beast. Despite the many re-tellings I've read, I'm still interested. :)
ReplyDeleteI love retellings of fairytales. I just haven't read many lately.
ReplyDeleteSarah J Maas's 'Queen of Glass' is due out next year, and it sounds AWESOME. Basically Cinderella, with assassins and violence and all the cool stuff.
ReplyDeleteRetellings can be fun- I liked Wicked, but not the rest of MacGuire's books.
ReplyDeleteI love fairy retellings and those look fab!!
